Interested in Paddling
From a beginning almost as old as mankind, when the kayak or canoe was part of the process of survival, to the present day, when boundaries of exploration are being rolled back, canoeing is a sport rich in potential for young and old - the adventurous and the less adventurous.
Canoeing offers a wide range of activities with something for everyone, some based on competition and others, less formalised, based on journeying and adventuring.
Clubs in the Region
There are around 40 BCU registered canoe clubs in the North West region, offering a range of opportunities and facilities for both novice and aspiring paddlers alike. To find your nearest canoe club, why not use the locator on the main BCU website?
Regional Developments
There are a number of exciting developments in North West region that will increase the opportunities for paddling locally, and will also improve the facilities available. These take a number of forms and this is just a summary of some of the projects currently underway.
If you club or organisation is currently expanding or working on other initiatives, please let us know!
Please find below a summary of the current facilities being developed for North West's paddlers.
The Changes
What has changed?
In October 2007, the BCU commenced the introduction of a new coaching scheme, including new performance awards (star tests and Paddle Power), coaching awards and safety awards. The changes to the coaching scheme have been developed over a number of years following the recommendations of the Paddlesport Review (2000), looking at the wider issues and long term needs of the sport in all its forms. Included in the consultation process was all four home nation coaching committees.
